Sewing Machine Questions for YOU

More questions for you!

I'm getting a sewing machine for my birthday, anniversary, and mother's day (Thanks Jesse!). What kind of machine do you have? Do you love it? Do you hate it? What do you wish it did that it doesn't? What settings do you use a lot?

I'm looking at Singer's because they are on sale at Jo-Ann's. I'd love to hear your input!

  1. I got mine a couple years ago for kind of the same occasion ;)
I wanted a mechanical machine. I went to about 6 stores looking at different kinds in my price range. I ended up buying (my Janome 525s) from a small store cause they were really nice and knowledgeable and offered a get to know your machine 'class'- I was the only one so it was nice, one on one. I wanted to go somewhere where I would feel like the service is good incase I needed to bring it back in for help or problems, but since you're moving it's probably not as important.
Danielle Carbajal loves buying old used machines (she just bought another one) because they are solid all metal and built to last.
Decide what features you really will use and want (by trying out the machines, and thinking about what you usually sew). For example, I didn't care if mine had a needle threader, but knew I wanted an easy button hole maker.
This website has a lot of people's reviews about different machines http://sewing.patternreview.com/
And this is good to look over before going to look at machines: http://sewing.about.com/od/sewingmachineindex/bb/buymachine.htm
That was long. Hope something there helps.

  2. I don't even know how I found your blog, but I've been following for a while. I am a Bernina fan. My mom had one, I learned to sew on one, and I got one for my wedding. They are pricey, but they last forever (according to my mom).

Well, I guess I just outed myself as a blog stalker :)

  3. Oooh! I love a stalker! Thanks Carrie. I know that Bernina's are great. I don't think I've the cash for one right now (the move, the new tires, the broken arm, etc...)

Brit, thanks for the sites, I will definitely check them out.

  4. I <3 Bernina. My mom has one that I hope to inherit someday. Right now I have a Bernette that I don't love, but it gets the job done. So my anti-recommendation is don't buy a Bernette. I don't use any fancy stitches, mostly straight and zigzag, but someday I want to own a machine with a walking foot so I can sew denim without the foot getting caught on the seams and knotting the thread everywhere. And breaking the needle in the process. Just sayin'.

  5. I don't own a sewing machine and I don't know how to sew but I have sewing fantasies. I basically want whatever she has http://www.dana-made-it.com/ in fact I left a comment on her blog asking her the same question and she responded. I totally felt like I a celebrity has reached out to me. Tender moment. Anyway, I'll forward you her e-mail.

  6. Just get a nice one. If you get a nice one- you will love it. Get one that's worth at least $300- but don't spend that much on it. I would get a nice used one off of craigslist. Tons of people out there have nice sewing machines that they have never even used.

  7. This is the sewing machine I baught over a year ago. I have used it soooo much and love it. I bought it from walmart I think. It was around 200$. The only thing I wish it had was a reach around arm thing to do large quilts...I did see other Brother machines that had those and they attached. I love min though. It's very easy and I started knowind nothing: Brother PC-420 PRW Limited Edition Project Runway Sewing Machine.

  8. I have a Janome. It works really well. It was a little pricey (around 600) but I think it will last a long time. My dream machine is an industrial bernina. They are NOT very portable. Sometimes you can find used ones for 3-5 hundred. At least 1200 dollars new, which is still way less than a home bernina. They are AMAZING, can sew through anything, never jam up and will literally last forever. I used one when I worked as tailor at BYU (it was a really fun job).

  9. I'm a little late weighing, but I love my Bernina. They are expensive, but I don't expect to ever replace it. It was a floor model, so a little less in price then new. And occasionally you'll see them on Craigslist. Good luck!
